Where to Find Social Impact Jobs in 2025

"It's a wild time. Where should I be looking for jobs right now?"

One of my clients recently asked where to look for impact jobs in light of the government cuts. Here's what I recommended:

1. State Government
⭐️ Pros: Working on local government can be very fulfilling
⚠️ Cons: Likely to pay less than federal jobs; for those who are able to/open to moving if your state isn't among those actively hiring
(Wayan Vota has been sharing lots of updates here with states including Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland, Minnesota... actively recruiting for former federal employees)

2. Social Entrepreneurship
⭐️ Pros: Don't have to wait for someone to give you a job, fill your job search time with tons of learning and new experiences, if you love building this is for you
⚠️ Cons: Financial stress depending on what you're setting up (but also may be lots of grants, loans, and resources), have to buy your own health care, takes time to get started

3. Philanthropy
⭐️ Pros: Likely to be a growing field, stable, play the role to shoring up gaps left by federal gov't
⚠️ Cons: Extremely competitive right now; hard to get in if you haven't already done it
🔗 Link: Consider family philanthropy (https://www.ncfp.org/) as an alternative to the big names

4. Political campaigns
⭐️ Pros: Huge need in upcoming races at all levels, actively contribute your skills to political change
⚠️ Cons: Short-term, high pressure, depending on role can be very low pay

5. “Safe harbors”
When I was building my business, I worked part-time in a wine shop and loved it. Don't let pride get in the way of taking a restaurant or retail job that lets you pay the rent. Plus organizing is happening everywhere and you might be surprised by new perspectives gained by stepping outside of your industry.

6. Run for Office
Run for Something is hosting a call on 3/25/25 specifically for federal workers who might want to run for office.

"We work with first-time candidates for local office -- while our endorsements are limited to folks 40 & under, our pipeline program has resources for everyone of all ages. We have lots and lots of materials + trainings to get campaigns off the ground."

Bonus: Where are rage donations going? These orgs may be growing (think ACLU).
