3 mindset shifts to improve your job search
Dec 06, 2022On a pretty much daily basis, I get asked this question:
What am I doing wrong in my job hunt?
I get it.
You might be worried about limited opportunities in social impact, or how to articulate your skills and experience for employers, and after you've been ghosted by a few employers, you might wonder if you have anything to offer...
And then I look at your resume or Linkedin profile and I'm astounded by the amazing things you've done in your career.
So what needs to change in order to get some effing traction?!
These 3 mindset shifts will make a huge difference.
1. Try splitting your job search time like this: 80% on relationships and 20% on applications.
💡 That's because more than 80% of jobs come through networks, not cold applications. And as many as 70% of jobs aren't published on publicly available job search sites. (Note that this is an often referenced but older stat so these numbers may shift a bit for you, but I'd encourage you to try this split and see how it works!)
Action: Review how much time you have for your job search at the start of each week. Align your time available with the 80/20 split so for example, if you have 5 hours available, spend 4 hours focused on relationship building and maintenance and 1 hour to apply to 1-2 jobs.
BONUS: CONNECT WITH PEOPLE WHO MAKE YOU FEEL SAFE AND VALUED FOR BEING YOU!
2. Drop the "shoulds" and follow your sparkles.
💡 If we've ever spoken, you'll know that I make a face like this when you say the word should. That's because it often comes from external expectations, not your own intrinsic desires.
